Recreation insurance covers a broad range of equipment, including boats, other watercraft, ATVs, RVs, and motorcycles. While Virginia doesn’t require a boat or ATV insurance, you must insure your motorcycle or RV since you drive them on the state’s major motorways.

Both motorcycle and RV insurance require the same level of coverage as the state of Virginia does for auto insurance. That means you need at least a minimum policy that provides coverage for bodily injury, property damage, and underinsured/uninsured motorist coverage. The specific coverage requirements include:

• bodily injury liability in the amount of $30,000 per person with a total of $60,000 per accident,
• property damage liability in the amount of $20,000 per accident,
• uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage of $30,000 per person with a total of $60,000 per accident for bodily injury,
• uninsured/underinsured motorist property damage coverage of $20,000 per accident.

You can add to either RV or motorcycle insurance, as you can with an auto policy. It is a good idea to add comprehensive and collision coverage to your policies and car rental insurance. The latter pays for your rental car if you need one while your motorcycle or RV is in the shop for repairs.

With an RV, you either insure it for driving from place to place, similar to auto insurance, or you insure it with a full-timers policy, which means you park it and live in it full time.
